“Fibonacci Numbers and Sequence Patterns in Nature”

Kicking off the FIRST Jacksonville Science Symposium is Mathematician, J. Arnold!

You may wonder - WHY would you Start with MATH?!? 

Because Math is EVERYWHERE! 

Swirling galaxies and nautilus shells! What do Mathematics and pinecones have in common? Are there patterns in Nature?  Mathematics is an elegant and universal language. Join J. Arnold, Mathematician Extraordinaire, as he describes the Fibonacci Numbers compared to the Golden Rule, and .. Yoda? 

Mathematics intrigues us and frequently eludes us. Come learn the elegant universal language from a fellow Star Wars Nerd. There may even be some *Magic!* 

J. Arnold is a tutor and homeschool teacher, born and raised in the Jacksonville area. Homeschooled from 7th grade through graduation, J. fell in love with math and science, and his dream was to become a mad scientist. While earning his degree in Chemistry from the University of North Florida, he discovered a passion for teaching and a knack for making the complex understandable. Since 2002, J. has helped many local homeschool groups and thousands of students (public, private, and homeschooled) develop an understanding, and even a love, for the mysteries of science and math. J. has been married to his lovely wife Sheri since 2005, and they have created 3 beautiful and exciting experiments they call their children (ages 12, 10, and 7)! He also has a deep love for Star Wars and pizza, often enjoyed together!


This presentation is highly engaging and high energy. It is appropriate for Families, Children, Adults, Date Night, Nerds & Geeks. Those with weak hearts, epilepsy, or pacemakers will be warned before dangerous episodes.

Dinosaurs: The Land That Once Was


Dinosaurs are more fascinating than ever! 

Join the brothers Nathan and Aaron DiPietro in a Wild Kratts-conversational, fast-paced and fully-illustrated multimedia presentation investigating the world of dinosaurs. Working through a field of research as large as the animals themselves, the duo investigate the science of fresh flesh found in fossil fragments, radiometric dating, and the latest developments in paleontology research. Many questions surround these incredible creatures of long ago. Let’s probe into these incredible mysteries and the scientific evidence together!


Aaron and Nathan DiPietro are brothers, petroleum/chemical industry specialists, and fellow science speakers. They have each earned a B.S.B.A. from Thomas Edison State University. For nearly a decade, they have conducted independent research and given numerous presentations on scientific topics. They firmly believe that science should be understandable, applicable, and engaging.


This presentation is appropriate for Families, Nerds, Adults, Children, Date Night, Geeks & Nerds, Anyone wanting to know more about Dinosaurs, all ages.

Dr. Grable’s warm, conversational presentation style allows difficult concepts to be discussed reasonably and with comprehensive understanding. He knows how to explain complex concepts in simple ways. He has all the degrees and experience to speak Medical and Pharmaceutical jargon, and the heart to keep talking till Everyone understands... and we can explain the concepts to others! What a rare gem he is!



Dr. Grable brings his conversational style to bear with the Covid-19 Vaccines.

  • Dr. Stephen E. Grable is a board-certified internal medicine doctor. After five years' experience in a hospital-based practice, he opened the Complementary Care Center in Jacksonville, FL. 

Enrollment to accept new patients is opened once per year as Dr. Grable is able. 

  • Dr. Grable became fully trained in five element acupuncture (although no longer practicing) which led to a 20 year exploration in what has been coined "Functional Medicine". He has spent thousands of hours studying various aspects of holistic medicine. 
  • Dr.Grable does not believe that alternative and conventional medicines are mutually exclusive. By keeping up with both conventional and alternative medicine, Dr. Grable can offer the best of both worlds.

The Process of iVF, Dispelling Common Myths in Fetal Development, and Donor Embryo “Adoption”

Dr. Samuel Brown, is the medical director of Brown Fertility. Dr. Brown completed his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship at the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine under IVF pioneers Drs. Georgeanna and Howard Jones, Jr. He is dually board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, providing patients more than 20 years of training and experience.


Dr. Samuel Brown is an acknowledged leader within his field and has been directly involved in the management of more than 10,000 In Vitro Fertilization cycles. He was also the first surgeon in the state of Florida to pioneer minimally invasive robotic gynecological surgery for treatment of infertility. He has successfully completed over 2,000 hospital based surgical procedures, including extensive experience performing tubal reversals.


Dr. Brown is a recipient of the Florida Medical Association’s Distinguished Physician Award. He has also been named one of “America’s Top Obstetrician Gynecologists” three years in a row by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, and has been inducted into Strathmore’s Who’s Who for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Physicians. Dr. Brown was selected by his peers for the award “Best Doctors in America” in 2009-2010 and again in 2011-2012.


Dr. Brown’s major interests include the practice of egg donation and high quality In Vitro Fertilization with special emphasis on cost-effective approaches to help couples have access to treatment, as well as pioneering minimally invasive reproductive surgical techniques. Dr. Brown’s commitment to excellent results and personalized patient care are central to his practice philosophy.

- Dr. H.E. “Buddy” Payne


Design at the Microscopic Level: The Incredible Cell


The Incredible Cell Explore the astounding nature of cells. See some of the amazing features of the incredible living cell that have been discovered over the last sixty years, and journey with us as we try to answer, “What is the explanation for the amazing complexity found in the biochemistry of every living cell?" Presented by Dr. H.E. “Buddy” Payne, 5th President of Florida College Dr. Payne received his professional training at Florida College (AA, Valedictorian), Florida State University (BS in Science Education, Cum Laude), Harvard University (MAT in Science Education), and University of South Florida (PhD in Mathematics Education).





Dr. Payne received his professional training at Florida College (A.A., Valedictorian), Florida State University (B.S. in Science Education, cum laude), Harvard University (M.A.T. in Science Education) and University of South Florida (Ph.D. in Mathematics Education). 


He joined the Florida College faculty in 1972. He has taught chemistry and mathematics and has served as Registrar, as Dean of Students, and from 1991-2009 as Vice President and Academic Dean, guiding the College through full accreditations of its first five bachelor’s degree programs.


His faith has always been of greatest importance in his life, and in 1993 he took a two-year leave of absence in order to preach the gospel in Romania following the fall of the Iron Curtain.


As a science and mathematics educator, he has devoted much time and energy to the study and discussion of intelligent design and evolution issues. He has been invited to deliver numerous lectures on this topic on college campuses and in other settings. 


He is also active in civic associations, including the Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce and Tampa North Rotary Club, where he also served as president in 2002-2003.


Dr. Payne was born in 1945 in Beaumont, Texas. He and his wife Marilyn (Geer) have been married for 55 years and reside in Temple Terrace, Florida. They have four children: Valerie (Garth), Amy (Eskut), Jeannie (Chandler), Benjamin Payne, and 16 grandchildren.


Dr. Buddy Payne is Fifth President of Florida College (established 1946 as a private, non-profit liberal arts institution in Temple Terrace, Florida). He was inaugurated at Opening Ceremonies & Inauguration on Monday evening, August 24, 2009.
